At the heart of Nea Makri, a few hundred metres from the beach, is one of the largest listed industrial complexes in Attica. The renowned Porcelana factory, which made porcelain products for electrical use and supplied such material to the Public Power Corporation (ΔΕΗ) for a long period, closed down in 1969, leaving the 4 hectare plant deserted. It was subsequently used occasionally for filming television series, but to this day has remained a black hole in the town centre.
The Non-profit Civil Company AEGEAS sponsored the necessary studies for the rehabilitation and utilization of the industrial building, as well the functional unification of the two existing structures and the surrounding space, in order to create a multipurpose cultural centre. In short, the proposal includes a small museum dedicated to the building’s industrial heritage, a flexible exhibition space for multiple uses, a theatre stage, facilities for art workshops, a small library/reading room, commercial activities, eateries and play areas.
