Ambliani, Evrytania

Dominating the main square of Ambliani – one of the most picturesque villages in the mountains of Evrytania, the history of which goes back to the fifteenth century – is the church of Saint Paraskevi, patron saint of the village. The church is dated on the basis of inscriptions to the late eighteenth century. The belltower was added later, in 1886. The church, in the type of a three-aisle basilica with women’s gallery (gynaikonites), is constructed of local grey stone. The iconostasis, of rare walnut wood, is a unique specimen of the woodcarver’s art of the early nineteenth century. Its despotic icons are dated to the same period. The elaborate ceiling of the interior was painted by Vasileios Droukas (1904). The church of Saint Paraskevi is a listed monument of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture since 1998. The ravages of time and the difficult weather conditions had caused considerable damage to the building and its decoration, the conservation and restoration of which is sponsored by Thanassis and Marina Martinos.
