The long and largely unknown history of the Petraki Monastery, in the heart of Athens, is revealed through the privately published, monumental bilingual (Greek and English) album. Apart from discussing the artistic treasures, the actual history of the monastery, as it developed in adverse circumstances, is a parallel narration of the history of the Greek capital. The accruing of a large land property from the monastery’s incomes was a way of making benefactions to the liberated city of Athens after the Revolution. The monastery’s landholdings, which spread throughout the Attica Basin, supplied the Greek State and a host of welfare foundations, essentially facilitating the development of Athens.
