The now abandoned monastery of the Virgin Phaneromene is located in the picturesque village of Petrovouni, a few kilometres from Kardamyli. The monastery katholikon, which celebrates the feast of the Virgin the Life-bearing Source (Zoodochos Pege), is the central church of the village of just 15 inhabitants. The monastery is dated to the seventeenth-eighteenth century and its arrangement and constitution conform to that of most of the monasteries in the kapetania of Androuvista, which at that period was enjoying an important economic heyday. The headman of the region, Panagiotis Troupakis-Mourtzinos, ceded the monastery to the Holy Sepulchre. Its katholikon, which is of cross-roof with dome type, is covered with wall-paintings, which existed also on the façade of the entrance to the nave. The monastery was abandoned in 1942, when the last monk died. Due to environmental conditions, as well as to inadequate conservation, the monument faced several problems. The Non-profit Civil Company AEGEAS undertook the works of restoring the roof of the katholikon (rehabilitation of vaults, formation of drain slopes with special waterproof plasters, new tiles) and the conservation of the wall-paintings.

DONATION OF THE NON-PROFIT CIVIL COMPANY AEGEAS
