The large church of the Virgin Mesiani or the Annunciation (Evangelismos) stands at the centre of the castelli of Emboreion on Santorini. Of cross-in-square type with dome, it was built in the sixteenth century. According to an inscription on the lintel of its entrance, it was renovated on 30 August 1662, when Parthenios was Archbishop of Santorini. Inscriptions refer to various interventions in the church, in 1741 and 1829. The most distinctive feature of the monument is its elaborate belfry, one of the most beautiful on the island. Erected in 1897, when Markos Drosos was mayor, it is three-tiered and crowned by a dome. The constructional details and its size make it a landmark in the historical settlement. In 2016 the Non-profit Civil Company AEGEAS undertook works for reinforcing, consolidating and restoring the belfry, which faced serious structural and static problems.
