The first Military Hospital was founded in 1904, on a plot close to the Holy Petrakis Monastery. Until 1945 it was the basic infirmary of the Greek Army, providing healthcare for thousands of patients and casualties of all the military conflicts, from the Balkan Wars to the Occupation and the Civil War. Concurrently, it functioned as a training centre for officers and soldiers of the Medical Corps. In 1958 planning began for the relocation of the military hospital to its present site. The building was completed in 1970, since when the 401 is Greece’s largest military hospital and one of its most modern and best-equipped medical institutions.

The Non-profit Civil Company AEGEAS has played a part in upgrading the hospital with a donation to create a High Dependency Unit.

The Non-profit Civil Company AEGEAS funded the creation of a High Dependency Nursing Unit on the sixth floor of the Hospital, which formerly housed the officers’ mess. The project involved the radical reconstruction of the space inside and outside, after wide-ranging technical and building interventions. On its completion, five one-bed wards, a ward for patients with special needs and two two-bed wards were added to the Hospital’s capacity, all fully equipped to the highest specifications. Furthermore, the new Unit was upgraded in terms of energy efficiency, with the installation of thermal insulation and double-glazing of doors and windows. Last, extensive works were carried out on the balconies, not only to improve their appearance but also for their static reinforcement.
