The Asklepieion was founded in 1921 as a sanatorium of the Greek Red Cross, for the treatment of tuberculosis of the bones and joints, as well as rickets. In 1948 it became a General Orthopedic Hospital and in 1985 it was incorporated in the National Health Service. With a personnel in excess of 1,100 and a capacity of around 400 beds, it now covers all fields of medicine.

The Asklepieion is the only Hospital in the wider region of Southeast Attica and provides medical care every day to many patients. Consequence of this situation is the constant need to upgrade its building infrastructure and to supply and install modern medical equipment.
