The Children’s Playground in the Zappeion Park is designed for pre-school and school children, placing particular emphasis also on activities for adolescents. It had operated from 2005 until 2014, since when it remained closed because of the need for its renovation. This project was undertaken by Thanassis and Marina Martinos, who in 2020 gifted to Athens a veritable jewel for the city. The equipment – backed up by a host of actions according to age group – is very different from the conventional models for children’s playgrounds in Greece, with activities also for children in wheelchairs, ensuring the greatest possible safety. Most of the equipment is made of wood and all the floorings are of water-permeable materials, fully attuned to the natural environment. On the fall surfaces of the equipment, mainly natural loose materials have been used.
