The clearing of paths and roadside vegetation is a management tool for fire prevention, provided it is carried out over a correct width on either side and is maintained at regular intervals of time. Pruning of trees and mowing of vegetation on paths, especially in areas of mixed-used woodland and residence, are considered imperative for effective forestry management and protection from forest fires. Zones cleared of vegetation, mainly of undergrowth and middle layers, can be extremely useful around settlements bordering on forest areas, as they are considered potential firebreak zones, containing the spread of the fire front and facilitating access in first degree of the fire service, the volunteer firefighters and the fire engines. In this framework, the Non-profit Civil Company AEGEAS undertakes every year, before the start of the fire-prevention period, the clearing of paths in many areas of Attica, such as the Kamariza forest in Lavreotiki and the Kouvaras forest in the Municipality of Saronikos.
