Known also as ‘Saint Nicholas the wealthy’, the foundations for the church were laid in 1848, to plans by the architect G. Metaxas. It is a three-aisle, two-storey basilica of imposing proportions. King Otto took a personal interest in its erection, issuing a decree ratifying the plans in 1851. Many Greeks living abroad, members of royal houses and ship-owners contributed to the cost of the construction of the church. Its marble iconostasis was carved in the period 1883-1899 by the Tenian marble-carver Georgios Vitalis and is considered one of the loveliest iconostases in the Cyclades. The same master craftsmen also created the marble episcopal throne, while the marble ambo (pulpit) is the work of the Chiot sculptor Antonios Frangoulis.
