The holy church of the Ascension of the Lord (Analepsis tou Kyriou) is the metropolis church of Koropi. It was consecrated in 1864. It is said that it was erected in fulfilment of a vow (tama) of the villagers for liberation from the Ottoman Turks. Moreover, the plot of land on which it stands was made over to the community by the freedom-fighter in the Greek Revolution, Mitros Merkouris. The monumental bell-tower was built in the years 1935-1937, to a design by Anastasios Orlandos. The surviving painted decoration in the church was executed between 1906 and 1913 by the artist Nikolaos Louvaris and the jewellery painter Ioannis Chrysochoos. Prior to the commencement of conservation interventions in 2019, the wall-paintings in the church presented several problems, while their aesthetics had been depreciated considerably. The iconostasis and the episcopal throne had been coated with varnish, while the pillars of the solea were coated in a different colour. After approval of the necessary studies by the Ephorate of Antiquities of East Attica, the Non-profit Civil Company AEGEAS sponsored the conservation of the wall-paintings in the sanctuary, the conservation and restoration of the iconostasis and the episcopal throne to their original form, as well as the aesthetic restoration of the pillars of the solea. Concurrently, by applying modern non-invasive methods, the earlier painting phases of the church were investigated. Works were carried out under the supervision of the Ephorate of Antiquities of East Attica.
