One of the most historic churches in the Peloponnese, Dormition of the Virgin (Koimesis tis Theotokou) stands at the entrance to the village and is dated to the late nineteenth century. According to the memoirs of Theodoros Kolokotronis, when a war council was held in Chrysovitsi, after the capture of Karytaina by the Ottoman Turks, and Kolokotronis proposed the besieging of Tripoli, the other revolutionary leaders (kapetanaioi) censured him and withdrew. Disappointed, he went into the village church and prayed for the Virgin’s help. On 28 April 1821, the chieftains of the freedom-fighters returned to Chrysovitsi and inside the church they appointed Kolokotronis commander-in-chief of the Struggle, so initiating the siege of Tripolitsa. Every year, in commemoration of this event, the Association of Chrysovitsiotiots together with the Municipality of Tripoli and the Holy Monastery of Mantineia and Kynouria organize a celebration. The Non-profit Civil Company AEGEAS, acknowledging the historical importance of the church of the Virgin, sponsored the remodelling of the grounds and the restoration of the porch.
