The book records a restoration project of rare extent and importance, befitting the history of the monastery and Egyptiot benefactors. Considering that the family of Thanassis and Marina Martinos has no roots in Egypt, the bold work it undertook for the restoration of the historic monastery of Saint George is an act of gratitude towards the Church, as well as towards the Greek community in Egypt. The history of the monastery is narrated clearly by an interdisciplinary team of professors and researchers from Greece and abroad. Many of them have linked their scholarly career with the monument: from Professor Efthymios Soulogiannis, leading historian on the Greeks of Egypt, who wrote the concluding chapter of the publication, to Academician Christos Zerefos, who offers a testimony de profundis on the land of his forebears, and from Peter Zihan, Head of the Archaeological Service in Abu Dhabi, to Professor Panagiotis Tzoumerkas, both of whom have devoted authoritative scientific treatises to the monastery. Alongside them, contributors to the monastery’s story are the Alexandrian architect of Greek origin, Mohamed Fouad Aoud, on whose plans the unique restoration project was based, with the input of Greek and Egyptian specialists. Details on the renovation works are given by Georgios and Grigoris Penelis.
