Location:
Pikermi, Attica

Since 2009, a team of geologists and palaeontologists headed by Professor Emeritus of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Giorgos Theodorou, has been carrying out, in collaboration with the Municipality of Rafina-Pikermi, palaeontological excavations at Pikermi. Aim of the investigations is to explore and enhance the remarkable and unknown world of Attica as it was 7,200,000 years ago. The project has also a strong educational dimension, with the participation of students and young researchers. The number of finds so far exceeds 4,000. The fossils collected reveal that in Attica around 7,200,000 BP the biodiversity was similar to and even richer than that of Africa today: Deinotheria, Mastodons, Giraffes, Bovids, Rhinoceroses, Acerorhinuses, Hipparia, Ancylotheria, Chalicotheria, Sabre-tooths, Metafelidae, Hyenas, Ictitheria, Pliohyraxes, Tortoises and other reptiles, Birds (ostriches, pheasants, etc.) as well as Primates. These works have resulted in many papers, scientific publications and doctoral theses, some of which are in progress. Ultimate goal of both the team and the Municipality is to create an emblematic, innovative palaeontological park and exhibition space.
