‘Eleftherios Venizelos’ Square, on the waterfront of the town of Artemida, lies on the south side of the natural bay. It presents a picture of dereliction, mainly due to the accumulation of sand at various points on the floorings and, because it is not properly designed, it was used mainly as a carpark. The existing square is redesigned, with new axes in its main area yet keeping the existing outline. Thus a clearly defined space for potential gatherings of people is formed, which is protected from the road by an elevated flowerbed and rows of seats formed on its inner side. Designed for its northeast side was a flowerbed with parapet all round, which prevents the accumulating of sand, while on the north side of the square is a new children’s playground, fenced off and with modern equipment for activities of infants. The basic aims of the intervention, through the planning, are the aesthetic upgrading of the delimited area, the upgrading of the flooring materials and the renovation of the urban furniture, planting of more vegetation, safer circulation of vehicles, the creation of proper pavements serving also people with mobility disabilities and impaired sight. Last, intention of the study is to give the area a distinctive character of its own.
